We were very close, but she's just recently graduated college and has a lot of other things on her mind, I suppose, so I guess I was just resigned that she'd moved on (this happens to me a lot). So I guess the feeling I got was, "wish you a happy birthday?! YOU abandoned ME!" even though it was a terrible thing to think, because I don't own people and would never begrudge them a real life. I just feel very insecure about it, since so many friends just sort of leave me behind.

Oh, I see. I can sort of understand that. Why don’t you try to keep in touch with her? If she truly was a very close friend you should tell her about your insecurity with your friendship. Why don’t you even try to share each other’s interest? You could try something that she likes and vice versa. Or even talk about good/fun/funny memories. I know that this is all going to be really scary, nerve-wracking, or even embarrassing (etc.) but if you want to “save” your friendship with her you first have to take the first steps to at least to try to maintain it.

I’m sorry if my advice really sucks or isn’t even close to what you need, but I do understand the feeling of insecurity especially with friends. So, even if you can’t make up with her/don’t try/or just whatever you can always throw your complaints, whines, etc. into my ask box. Because the least I can do is actually listen to what you have to say. ^^
